Encrypted messaging as a baseline

Example entry. This placeholder shows how a directory record will be written. It is not a review, a ranking, or a recommendation.
A familiar case: a conversation that stays between the people in it, and the metadata that still exists around it.
An end-to-end encrypted messenger is a useful baseline for personal privacy. The contents of a message are unreadable to the service that carries them. That is the veil: the conversation is disclosed to the people you chose, and withheld from the platform.
It is not a complete veil. The service may still see that an account exists, when it is online, and roughly whom it talks to. A device, a backup, and the person on the other side can each reveal what the encryption hid.
A finished entry in this topic will name specific tools, say what each one hides and what it does not, and point to primary documentation. This example does not recommend a product.
